DVD Replication V’s DVD-R Duplication We
have been manufacturing optical discs since 1992 and in 1994 we were
one of the first companies to offer CD-R recording in the north of
England. Our first CD-R recorder cost over £ 2000.00 and
the discs cost £ 25.00 each. Things have moved on a long way
since then, however having had more experience with the format than
most, we truly believe that replicated DVD’s are superior to
duplicated DVD-R discs. Although DVD offers a higher capacity than CD,
the processes for DVD-R and CD-R duplication are essentially the same.
DVD Replication
All
masters supplied to us are first analysed on Eclipse CD & DVD
verification systems for any errors on the disc. Errors can be produced
by: -
- Defective media, we recommend using high quality branded media.
- Errors in the disc recording process, you should record your master at the
lowest possible speed and avoid running other applications and screen savers
during the recording stage.
- Physical damage, your master should be free of scratches, dust, fingerprints and
only use a felt-tip permanent marker pen to write on the disc. We recommend
sending masters in album cases, as they offer the best protection for the DVD
master.
Once
your master has passed verification we glass master your disc, we then
electroform this to produce a stamper. This is checked to ensure no
errors have been introduced.
Your stamper is then loaded into
the pressing machine. During this stage molten polycarbonate is
injected into the mould holding your stamper and forms your disc. The
disc is removed from the mould moved onto the cooling station. At this
point the discs are clear and contain all the digital information,
however it cannot be played because there is no reflective layer.
The
clear discs are now placed in the metaliser. The metaliser coats the
information side of the disc (upper surface) a thin layer of aluminium.
This metal layer is the reflective surface that can be seen on the
reverse of a DVD pressing. The metal layer is then coated in lacquer for
protection and provides a suitable surface to print the label.
We
can now verify the discs to make sure that they are exact copies of
your master with no additional errors. When this stage is completed we
are ready to print your disc.
We have a choice of two printing
methods for DVD onbody, silk screen and offset litho. Silk screen is
best used when you want to print solid blocks of colour or use PANTONE,
florescent or metallic inks. We use offset for printing full colour or
photographic images with a high level of shading detail. If your not
sure which one is best for you, send us a copy of your artwork and we
will be happy to advise. The inks used in both processes are scratch
and moisture resistant.
Finally your discs are ready to go to
the fulfilment department and are machine packed into your required
packaging with the associated paper parts. They are then over-wrapped
for protection & security, and then put into 25 way cartons ready
for delivery.
DVD Duplication
We
understand that there is a need for DVD duplication, if you need very
fast turnaround or a very limited run this is the best option. But if
time and budget allows DVD replication offers the best solution, when
you are selling or promoting your product, the quality, consistency and
a professional image say’s everything. This is why as a company we have never, or will
offer duplicated DVD-R, as we know that every disc we manufacture will
be of the highest quality and will last long into the future.
Most
small-scale duplicators do not have access to high-end error checking
systems and tend to duplicate discs unchecked. If your disc is not
checked, any errors on your master will be reproduced on your DVD-R
copies. These errors will make the disc far more susceptible to skips
or even render it unplayable.
Your disc will be loaded into a DVD
copying tower, these contain up to 10 recorders, and the quality of the
recorders in towers can vary greatly. Your disc will then be
individually burned onto blank media, most duplicators use unbranded
discs and the quality can be suspect.
Nearly all duplicators
write the discs at the fastest speed possible to achieve a high
throughput. We reject more masters for high-speed write errors than for
any other reason. Even using the best writers and media, it is almost
impossible not to introduce disc errors at high writing speeds, as
with a poor master this makes a disc more susceptible to playback
problems.
Duplication company’s offer a wide range of disc
printing options, from inkjet to thermal print. The inkjet prints use
the same system as in a desktop printer, however these can be prone to
scratches and moisture, even sweat from fingerprints can leave a
permanent mark. Thermal printers offer a harder wearing and moisture
resistant print surface, however colour accuracy and detail cannot
match DVD offset print, text and graphics can appear grainy. Neither of
these processes allows you to print PANTONE, metallic or fluorescent
colours. In the long term there are issues of durability,
recordable DVD-R discs, especially write once discs, are highly susceptible to
damage from sunlight as the dye’s used for the recording area are
easily damaged by UV rays. Discs left in direct sunlight can fail in a
matter of days.
Although not as much of a problem as it was
several years ago there are issues of compatibility, many older players
will not play DVD-R discs, particularly some high-end audiophile
systems. Our pressed DVD’s are universally compatible and will play on all DVD players.
Some of the above might sound complicated, but don’t
worry as we are here to simplify the process. If you have any questions
about DVD manufacturing, just give us a call, advice is always free.
